Highlights: Student place-based investigation that leads to learning about a Superfund site and its implications to surrounding communities.
Summary: This place-based investigation results in students incidently finding about an EPA Superfund Site that is located in and around the lower Passaic River, centered on the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, NJ. This river was used by companies as sewers, discharging their toxic waste into the river. They will learn about Agent Orange, a pesticide used as a defoliant during the Vietname War era. Discharge into the river as well as incinerator smoke and ash in the air resulted in dioxin contamination. Dioxin is a persistent carcinogen and highly toxic substance. Students will learn its community impact and resulting activism.
