Highlights: A student-centered unit on how energy is generated in your area, and its impacts. The activities are adaptable for any geographic region.
Summary: This unit is intended to go after a typical unit on energy in a physics class, using pedagogical methods such as collaborative work, whiteboarding, class discussion, and consensus-building. Students start by researching the energy resources used in their state and examining the criteria, values, and impacts associated with each resource. They use energy tracking diagrams to analyze a power plant in their area, thinking critically about its impacts on environment and people. Finally, they research local energy justice organizations and use this as a jumping-off point for a data-informed project on energy justice advocacy.
